The question everyone is asking right now…
Should I wake up my tubers?
Or
When should I wake up my tubers?
If you plan on taking a couple tuber pulls, bring your tubers into a warmer area about 4 weeks before your last frost date. This should give you enough time to get a sprout or 2 to pull, but not so long your home turns into a dahlia jungle.
If you don’t plan on doing cuttings, there really isn’t a NEED to wake up your tubers… as long as you have a clear eye, they can be planted just as they are, there is no reason to make it complicated.
A lot of growers choose to wake up tubers and pot them up before their last frost date trying to get a jump on the growing season, and have flowers for a longer portion of the year. While it can be nice, it can also become overwhelming. Unless you live in a very cold growing zone, it is not a requirement to achieve the dahlia garden of your dreams.
Start your tubers early, or pull them out of storage and drop them into a hole in your garden the same day. Either way, you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers.
Always the most important thing to remember when planning a dahlia garden, is growing dahlias is supposed to bring you joy. If they are adding stress to your life, or you are feeling overwhelmed, it is time to take a step back, and simplify. Do what you can, let go of the rest, and I can’t wait to grow with you.
